I would go with E.
It clearly indicates that the temperature increased to the highest level recorded....

"Increased to.......the highest level" does seem logical

btw, what is the OA for this?

We need a superlative degree here.

It is 'A'.

I think 'D' distorts the meaning.

The OA is E. This is from Kaplan.

Initially, I got D too. :(

So... C and D distorts meaning since the original sentence did not suggest the temperature being a record high.

A is missing the word "level" after the "highest"...

B has the correct "level" in the sentence but is inferior and awakard compared to E.

I'm confused by the different meanings. E and A seem to say the same as C and D to me. Could you go into detail?
