Let the total number of students in 2002 be N1
30% of N1 are engineering majors.
The population of 2003 is not given . Let it be N2.
Need to find the percent increase of engineering majors from 2002 to 2003.
Statement 1:
(1) In 2003, 45% of the students at the university were engineering majors.
45% of N2 are engineering major. Since we don’t know the value of N1 and N2 , we cannot answer the question.
Hence, INSUFFICIENT
Statement 2:
(2) The number of engineering majors at the university increased by 750 between 2002 and 2003.
45% of N2 - 30% of N1 = 750
we don’t know the values of N1 and N2, hence cannot answer the question. N2 might be either greater than or less than or equal to N1.
Hence, INSUFFICIENT
