The difference depends on which part of speech these words are used as:
AS ADJECTIVE:
Double and
twice both can be used as adjective:
My age is double that of yours..... correct
My age is twice that of yours .... correct
AS ADVERB:
Double cannot be used as adverb, but
twice can be used as adverb:
I did it twice..... correct
I did it double.... wrong
AS VERB:
Double can be used as verb, but
twice cannot be used as verb:
MY salary doubled in last two years..... correct
MY salary twiced in last 2 years...... wrong.
Twice is used to replace
two times. (The word "two times" is not a standard usage.)
The above explanation applies for
thrice,
triple and
three times as well.
