1) 1/3 of the finance professors do outside consulting.
2) The ratio of the number of accounting professors that do outside consulting to the number of finance professors that do outside consulting is 3:4.

Please explain in detail your answer so that we can all follow it.

Let total professors be 3x.

So, Accounting professors = 2x and Finance professors = x.

Now, Statement 1 says x/3 is the Finance professors who do Outside consulting. But we don;t know about Accounting professors who do outside consulting. Hence, Insufficient.

Now, Statement 2 : Accounting outside/Finance outside= 3/4 or say Accounting Outside = 3y and Finance Outside = 4y

Required Ratio, Total Outside/Total Not Outside= 7y/((2x-3y )+(x-4y))

= 7y/(3x-7y)

But we don't know the relation between x and y, we cannot solve this equation. hence, insufficient.

Combining, from one we know that x/3 = 4y or x=12y

Substitute this value in the equation of 2, we can get rid of variables and get the ratio as 7/29.

hence, C.
