In a certain kindergarten, every child has got either a dog or a cat or both. 18 children have got dogs only and 6 children have got both dogs and cats. If there are 30 children in the kindergarten, how many of them have cats?

There are 30 children and 18 have got dogs only. Then the other 12 children have got cats or both, but in each case, all the 12 children have got cats.

This is a question that can be solved easily if we draw a Venn diagram.

The first statement in the question makes it very clear that every child has at least one pet i.e. there is no child without any pet. Therefore, the total number of people in the kindergarten is the sum of the regions inside the circle.
Therefore, x + 6 + 18 = 30.
Solving, we have x = 6. Beware of trap answer option A. x = 6 represents those children who have got cats only; however, the question asks us to find how many of them have cats.
This means, we have to consider the values inside the whole circle representing cats. Clearly, that is x + 6 which equals 12.
The correct answer option is B.
