In a certain restaurant, if each soft drink costs the same amount, what is the cost, excluding sales tax, of 1 soft drink?

(1) The cost, excluding sales tax, of 5 soft drinks is $6.25.
(2) The cost, including sales tax, of 3 soft drinks is $4.05.

Cost (excluding sales tax) =?

(1) The cost, excluding sales tax, of 5 soft drinks is $6.25.
Cost * 5 = 6.25
Cost of one drink = 1.25 (excluding sales tax)

SUFFICIENT!

(2) The cost, including sales tax, of 3 soft drinks is $4.05.
(Cost + Sales Tax) * 3 = 4.05
(Cost + Sales Tax) of one drink = 4.05/3 = $1.35
But we don't know how much the sales tax is => so can't figure out the price excluding sales tax.

INSUFFICIENT!

IMO answer is option A

(1) The cost, excluding sales tax, of 5 soft drinks is $6.25.

Since total amount excluding tax is given along with total number of drinks, we can calculate cost per drink. Cost = \(\frac{6.25}{5}\) = $1.25
SUFFICIENT.

(2) The cost, including sales tax, of 3 soft drinks is $4.05.

Total cost $4.05 includes tax the rate of which is unknown. Hence tax can be 1%, 5%, 10% or may be 25%.
Thus, cost per drink can vary any number of times.

INSUFFICIENT.

Answer (A).

We are to determine the cost of a soft drink excluding sales tax.

From 1, we know that the cost excluding sales tax of 5 soft drinks is $6.25.
Therefore cost per soft drink excluding sales tax = 6.25/5 = $1.05.
Statement 1 is sufficient.

From 2 we know that cost of three soft drink including sales tax is $4.05
This is insufficient because we don’t know the proportion of the amount which is sales tax.

The answer is therefore A.

"each soft drink costs the same amount"

(1) The cost, excluding sales tax, of 5 soft drinks is $6.25: 6.25/5=1.25 each soft drink, sufic.
(2) The cost, including sales tax, of 3 soft drinks is $4.05: we don't know sales tax, insufic.
