Given: In a certain salad, the ratio, by weight, of potatoes to boiled eggs is double the ratio, by weight, of boiled eggs to green peas.

Asked: If the weight of the eggs in the salad is half the weight of the potatoes, then what is the ratio, by weight, of potatoes to green peas in the salad?

Let the weight of potatoes, boiled eggs and green peas be p, b & g respectively.

In a certain salad, the ratio, by weight, of potatoes to boiled eggs is double the ratio, by weight, of boiled eggs to green peas.
p/b = 2b/g

The weight of the eggs in the salad is half the weight of the potatoes
b/p = 1/2

b/g = 1; b = g

p/g = p/b = 2

Starting from
"the weight of the eggs in the salad is half the weight of the potatoes"
=> the ratio, by weight, of potatoes to boiled eggs is 2:1

2:1 is "double the ratio, by weight, of boiled eggs to green peas"
=> the ratio, by weight, of boiled eggs to green peas is 1:1

So potatoes : boiled eggs : green peas = 2:1:1
the ratio, by weight, of potatoes to green peas in the salad is thus 2:1

The answer is thus (D).
