In a class of 30 students, 17 students study Chinese, and  r  students study Japanese. Every student studies either Chinese, Japanese or both. How many students study both Chinese and Japanese?

1)  r  = 14
2) Thirteen students take only Japanese

state 1.....if x is both then....17-x+r-x+x = 30
we know r we know x....suff

state 2....r-x = 13

x can be more than one value....insuff...

for 1st statement no problem, it i sufficient

for 2nd statement, we know that 17 people are studying chinese and we know that 13 people are ONLY studying japanese. It means no people study both because the total has to be 30 and 17+13 is already 30, there's no possibilities to have people studying both :roll:

From 'B' we only know that 13 people who are studying Japanese are not studying Chinese but we do not know how many people in total are studying Japanese, so will go with 'A'
