In a recent practice test, really got stuck with this question. Can anyone please explain HOW to solve this, rather than the answer itself:

Question - A triangular park, of 6m each side, is surrounded by a path that is sqrt 3 metres in width - distance from park to outer edge of path at the bottom of the triangle. What is the area of the path?

Am trying to insert a picture - not sure if that helps.

21 root(3) + 9

Three rectangles area + 3 Parallalograms area + 6 (30-60-90 triangles) area.

18 root (3) + 9 + 3 root (3)

21 root(3) + 9

answer should be 27root(3)

both triangles should be equilateral.. as arms are separated by same distance, and parallel...

so with the dimensions given, outer eq triangle comes with the side of 12...

so path area comes out to be the difference between the two triangle's area.. which is 27.root(3)

I agree with mm07's explanation. The side of the larger triangle would be 12.
Henec the difference in area = are of path =

rt(3)[12^2 - 6^]/4

=> 27rt(3)
