Average speed of entire distance \(=\frac{\text{Total distance}}{\text{Total time taken}}=\frac{2d}{t_1+t_2}\)

Lets assume the distance from A to B to be 120 miles
Time taken for onward trip, \(t_1=\frac{120}{40}=3\)
Time taken for return trip, \(t_2=\frac{120}{60}=2\)
Average speed of entire distance \(=\frac{2*120}{3+2}=\frac{240}{5}=48\)
