The assumption must explain and support the conclusion. The conclusion is that aristocrats naturally opposed the encouragement of artisans and manufacturers. The premise before is that most of their interests were tied up in land. The correct answer, E, connects premise and conclusion by stating that people with land interest have no interest in helping to promote manufacturing. Therefore, the aristocrats would have a natural opposition to Solon´s reforms.

Negate the above statement- Those with interest in land are interested in or fostering manufacturing-
This breaks down the conclusion. The aristocrats are interested in land and are sabotaging many of Solon's project which includes fostering manufacturing.
I was also confused with D. However the statement, "many aristocrats did not bother with politics " bothered me!
