Option A, C,& E are incorrect because of subject verb error. The sentence structure in option B is awkward because of the use of "its having". So D is the correct choice.

A and E are out for awkward phrasing.
B is out since "its" is wrong
C is out since "increases" does not agree with subject "life expectancies"
So my answer is D

Scanning the first part, we have "due to" in A and B vs "because of" in C, D and E. Since we are starting a new clause and giving reason for complete action, "due to" is wrong. So eliminate A and B.

Let's scan last part of C, D and E. Expectancies that increases in C and E vs expectancies that increase. Only D has correct S-V agreement. So ans is D.

Re: In Chicago, the coyote population is between 2,000 and 4,000; [#permalink]
In Chicago, the coyote population is between 2,000 and 4,000; due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases the population in Cook County.

Analysis: i prefer the use of has or have over having
The clause after semicolon seems to provide a reason for the first clause - Because should be used over due to . also because should be
always followed by an independent clause.
Between C and D : "Coyotes have high survival rates" is better than " Coyote has high survival rates"

I choose D

(A) due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases

(B) due to its having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain pair bonds and thus has much longer life expectancies that increase

(C) because it has high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain a pair bond and thus has much longer life expectancies that increases

(D) because they have high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain pair bonds and thus have much longer life expectancies that increase - Correct

(E) because of having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases

A- wrong. Not clear what'their' refers to.
B- wrong. Not clear what 'its' refer to. 'Increase' is wrong usage i.e. tense error.
C- wrong. Not clear what'it' refers to.
D- Wrong . Not clear what 'they' refers to.'Increase' is wrong usage i.e. tense error.
E- above stated errors are corrected. 'Increases' is the correct usage.

E is the correct answer

In Chicago, the coyote population is between 2,000 and 4,000; due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases the population in Cook County.

In this question, we can test Subject-Verb agreement thing.
1. Subject is "life expectancies" and verb is "increases" in the original sentence
If subject is 'life expectancies' , the verb must be 'increase' ----> this rules out option A,C, and E.

In B and D, when we check 'due to' vs 'because', due to can be replaces by 'caused by' and that doesn't make sense in B. So, D is the answer

(D) because they have high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain pair bonds and thus have much longer life expectancies that increase

(E) because of having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases

A,B,C: rejected due to use of due to.Due to is used if it succeeded by a noun.
D:increase is correct since it is modifying the life expectancies. Hence this is correct
E: Since increases is not in subject verb agreement with the life expectancies, therefore this is wrong.

My choice is (D). It took me 1:17.

"Due to" is an adjective and cannot be used as adverb / modifier as in option (A) and (B). Admittedly, this is very strict convention that few people observe.

(C) is incorrect because subject-verb do not agree in "expectancies that increases":That modifies "expectancies", a plural noun. So "increases" has to be "increase".

(E) Same as above. Also, "having" in "because of having" can be deleted.

Re: In Chicago, the coyote population is between 2,000 and 4,000; [#permalink]
Key things to notice-

1. Subject verb agreement: The verb "increase" needs to be used with the plural subject "life expectancies".
2. Due to vs Because of. "Due to their/its having" is incorrect construction. Also "Due to" can only modify nouns. In choices A and B, due to modifies "copiously reproduces" which is incorrect. "Because of" should be used to modify verbs.

Let’s take a look at each option and eliminate any problematic options:

(A) due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases
Incorrect. Subject Verb error with "life expectancies that increases". Should be "increase". Error with the usage of "due to their having" as mentioned in Key point 2.

(B) due to its having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain pair bonds and thus has much longer life expectancies that increase
Incorrect. Error with the usage of "due to its having" as mentioned in Key point 2.

(C) because it has high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain a pair bond and thus has much longer life expectancies that increases
Incorrect. Subject Verb error with "life expectancies that increases". Should be "increase".

(D) because they have high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain pair bonds and thus have much longer life expectancies that increase
Correct. Proper subject verb agreement. Correct usage of because.

(E) because of having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases
Incorrect. Subject Verb error with "life expectancies that increases". Should be "increase".

D is the correct one.
Due to has to be followed by a Noun. Due to/caused by is a wrong usage. for reasons because is used.

(A) due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases.........Wrong for above reason

(B) due to its having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain pair bonds and thus has much longer life expectancies that increase........Wrong for above reason

(C) because it has high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain a pair bond and thus has much longer life expectancies that increases.............Here due to is replaced by because but "that increases" is a wrong SV agreement. that refers plural expediencies and hence should be followed by increase

(D) because they have high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain pair bonds and thus have much longer life expectancies that increase........The best of all with correct modifier and SV agreement

(E) because of having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases........because of having is wrong. of should be followed by a noun or pronoun. The verb after of is wrong usage.

(A) due to their having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases - Due to is used incorrectly as it modifies the act of "reproduce". Due to can only be used to modify nouns and not verbs.

(B) due to its having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain pair bonds and thus has much longer life expectancies that increase - Same error as A

(C) because it has high survival rates in urban areas, the coyote copiously reproduces to maintain a pair bond and thus has much longer life expectancies that increases - Subject-verb error - must be increase

(D) because they have high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain pair bonds and thus have much longer life expectancies that increase - Correct

(E) because of having high survival rates in urban areas, the coyotes copiously reproduce to maintain a pair bond and thus have much longer life expectancies that increases - Same error as C

In A: 'due to their having' is awkward. life expectancies that increases - incorrect; should be 'increase'
In B: 'due to its having' is awkward.
In C: 'coyote' is singular, but 'life expectancies' is plural.
In E: life expectancies that increases - incorrect; should be 'increase'
