(1) Exactly 40 percent of the female employees are over 50 years of age, and, of them, 2/5 are over 55 years of age.
(2) Exactly 20 male employees are over 55 years of age.

Let employees above 55 years be A 
 And total employees be B

We need to know if  \frac{A}{B} > \frac{1}{4}

Statement 1: Some number of employees say F are female, Out of which 40% of Females are above 50 years of which 40% (2/5) are above 55 years 
 We are not getting the total employee count, neither total male employee count to estimate value of female employees 
 Not sufficient

Statement 2: 20 male employees are over 55 years, But how many employees are in total, Not sufficient

Combining also we are not able to tell about total number of employees or neither total female employees.

we need to find if 1/4 employee are older than 55

Option 1:
40% of female are 50+ and 2/5 of them should are greater than 55. We don't know anything about total female employees nor male employees. so cant say if it is above 1/4 (not sufficient)

Option 2:
Exactly 20M are above 55 yrs , we don't know the total employees nor female employees so not sufficient.

Option 1+2:
together we don't about total male or female employees , hence not sufficient. so it should be option E
