I agree with this. Statement 2 is still ambiguous. We cannot assume that the 20 athletes represent all eligible candidates, especially given how statement one explicitly states 'the number of eligible candidates'. I chose A for this reason.

Somebody please clarify my following doubt:
I statement 2, the information that we have is: that 12 of 20 athletes are eligible, but it's not mentioned that these 20 athletes represent the total pool. So how can i assume that i have to select 12 out of only 20 and not 30 or 40.

(1) gives an answer to how many candidates are in the pool of eligible candidates which is 4*3 = 12
(2) also gives an answer how large is the pool of candidates which is 20* 60% = 12
From answers
A - statement (1) alone is sufficient but (2) is not
B - statement (2) alone is sufficient but (1) is not
C - both statements together are sufficient but neither is alone
D - each statement alone is sufficient
E - both statements together are not sufficient
the correct answer is D because what is needed is the number of people the coach can choose from in other words the pool of eligible candidates
