Hi ,
I would go for A over E because of the following reason:

1) In A, help - determine are verbs and maintain a parellellism ..
2) E is more wordy.

In Kaplan and other books also, chose for short anwers in case of a tie and eliminate choices with -ing.. This is perfect case for it.

This is what my resoning is.

E is wrong cause it uses the passive voice and there are more simple ways of writing it. C & D clearly no Subj-Verb agreement.
I would chose A, even if I had some doubts with B.

In human hearing, subtle differences in how the two ears hear a given sound help the listener determine the qualities of that sound.

A)in how the two ears hear a given sound help the listener determine
B)in the two ears hearing a given sound help the listener in determining
C)in how a sound is heard by the two ears helps the listener determine
D)between how the two ears a given sound helps the listener in determining
E)between how a sound is heard by the two ears help the listener in determining

"A" seems to be better of the rest though it isn't free from flaws.
I think 'between' should be used instead of 'in'

Thanks guys. The OA is A :) Actually I was reading it again and I realised too why it was flawed, hahaha! One more lesson learned is that I know that people have different schedules but don't take an exam when you are tired or at night you know, but it varies for different people......
