In jar A, 60% of the marbles are red and the rest are green. 40% of the red marbles are moved to an empty jar B. 60% of the green marbles are moved to an empty jar C. The marbles in both B and C are now moved to another empty jar D. What fraction of the marbles in jar A were moved to jar D?

(A) 0.12
(B) 0.24
(C) 0.36
(D) 0.48
(E) 0.6

Jar A = total 100 Red; 60 and Green = 40
so Moved to Jar b ; 24 and Jar c ; 24
total in Jar D; 48
fraction moved to D from A ; 48/100 ; .48
IMO D

Solution

Given:
    • In jar A, 60% of the marbles are red and the rest are green
    • 40% of the red marbles are moved to an empty jar B
    • 60% of the green marbles are moved to an empty jar C
    • The marbles in both B and C are now moved to another empty jar D

To find:
    • The fraction of the marbles in jar A were moved to jar D

Approach and Working Out:
Let the total number of marbles in A be 100x
    • This implies, 60x are red marbles, and 40x are green marbles
    • 40% of the red marbles = 24x marbles are moved to jar B
    • 60% of the green marbles = 24x marbles are moved to jar C
    • These 24x + 24x = 48x marbles are moved to jar D.

Therefore, the fraction of marbles in jar A that were moved to jar D = \(\frac{48x}{100x} = 0.48\)

Answer: D

Lets assume total number of marbles = 100
In Jar A, Red Marbles is 60% of Total Marbles which is 60 and rest are the Green Marbles which is 40.
Now, 60% of RM moved to Jar B= 24
40% OF GM moved to Jar C= 24
Now marbles from Jar B and C moved to Jar D= 48

Now the question is fraction of Jar A marbles moved to Jar D= 24/100= 0.24.

Hence, answer is B.
