A. optimizing rather than reduce administrative costs
Incorrect.
This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The construction A rather than B requires that A and B belong to the same part of speech. If A and B are unconjugated verbs, they should be of the same type. Optimizing is a Verb+ing whereas reduce is not.
What helps us identify this question as a Parallelism question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:
- A rather than B
B. to optimize rather than the reduction of administrative cost
Incorrect.
This answer choice repeats the original Parallelism mistake. The construction A rather than B requires that A and B belong to the same part of speech. In this answer choice, A is an unconjugated verb (to optimize) whereas B is a noun (reduction).
C. to optimize rather than reduce administrative costs
This answer choice uses the construction A rather than B correctly. Optimize parallels reduce. It is also the most stylistically effective of the five answer choices, for two major reasons:
1) The corrected sentence uses the concise phrase administrative costs.
2) It is not necessary to repeat to after rather than. The preposition to, which precedes optimize is the controlling part of the parallelism and so it does double duty both for optimize and for reduce.
In a parallel construction the items of the list should either all be preceded with to, or all lack to. But do not mix - and keep to before some items, and not before others:
- Examples:
1. Correct: John will go to Paris, Rome, and France in the summer.
2. Correct: John will go to Paris, to Rome, and to France in the summer.
Incorrect: John will go to Paris, Rome, and to France in the summer.
D. to optimize rather than reduce the cost of administration
Incorrect.
Although this answer choice corrects the original Parallelism mistake and is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed. The phrase the cost of administration is not as concise as administrative costs.
E. to apply the optimization rather than the reduction of administrative costs
Incorrect.
Although this answer choice corrects the original Parallelism mistake and is grammatically correct, it is stylistically flawed. Adding the word apply creates redundancy.
There's another grammatically correct answer choice that is more concise than this one. Look for it!
