In one of the OG questions there is a classic like vs. as split.
The OA says that since we are dealing with a phrase rather than a clause, we use like instead of as.
"...., like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to others."
why is that not a clause? It seems to have a subject (pearls) and a verb (moving).

use like to compare nouns.
"...., like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to others."
if you want to compare clauses, you need a 'do'

except in this case we're not comparing nouns.
the comparison is not to "pearls", but to the way "pearls move".
Move is the verb, so we shouldn't need a 'do'
