Thank you REED ARNOLD.

My initial thought is that in B, it shows WHETHER the children do BETTER(the 1st part of the 2nd Paragraph) or NOT BETTER (but, the last sentence 2nd Paragraph does not show that children will not do better.)

However, because the 2nd paragraph gives reasons for GOOD BENEFIT (children perform better) and for potential DOWNSIDE (difficulty of seeing family) of boarding, I think E better represents the main point of the 2nd paragraph (a GOOD thing or NOT GOOD one)

I think you are 'hanging' something on to 'do better' that shouldn't be (from your own biases and assumptions maybe).

What does 'do better' mean?

Thanks again, REED ARNOLD

"Do better" in this context is to achieve good grades in boarding.

If my understanding is not correct, can you correct it?

Well, I would simply ask why you think that is what 'do better' means, and to wonder if possibly it might mean something different.

HI REED,

If possible, can you give a different reason (other than too broad) to reject answer E.
E (Whether or NOT boarding schools are a good thing).
As in 2nd paragraph, first few sentences show the positive of boarding schools (YES, a good thing)
while the last sentence indicates a potential negative effect (NOT a good thing)

Consider this (completely made up) paragraph:

Quote:
Apples have been known to be a healthy food for centuries, but in recent decades doctors are discovering that apples might be particularly beneficial for children aged 5-7 who live in the Arctic Circle. The relative lack of sunlight and cold temperatures in the region leave many children with deficiencies of Vitamin V, which is crucial during those developmental years, and apples are loaded with vitamin V. However, some nutrition experts warn that parents should not be too quick to feed their children too many apples. Many people in the region lack a gene that helps galbladders synthesize some of the other vitamins in apples, which can become toxic if they reach high enough levels in the bloodstream.

Would you say it's right to say this paragraph is about 'whether or not apples are healthy?'

No.

It's too broad. You're asking if there's a different reason for E being wrong, but there's not one. It's too broad. The passage is not about whether or boarding schools are good things IN GENERAL, just like the paragraph above was not about whether apples are healthy IN GENERAL. The passages are about whether boarding schools or apples are good things FOR A SPECIFIC GROUP OF PEOPLE. Losing the specific group of people loses a major part of the passage's purpose. There's just no avoiding that fact.

Official Explanation

3. The author relies on which of the following assumptions?

Difficulty Level: Medium

Explanation

Better exam results are assumed to demonstrate that this kind of intervention works. The passage does not consider the question of whether or not the children are happier at boarding school, nor does it address the issue of tax breaks. That charities are willing to pay the fees is presented in the passage as a fact, so is not an assumption.

Answer: D

Q1: Why is answer D not correct? In B, the answer does not appear to encapsulate any material from the first paragraph regarding the rich attending boarding schools, whereas in D, it seems broader and could include material from both paragraphs.

Q1: Why is answer D not correct? In B, the answer does not appear to encapsulate any material from the first paragraph regarding the rich attending boarding schools, whereas in D, it seems broader and could include material from both paragraphs.

Official Explanation

1. Which of the following statements best sums up the primary objective of the passage?

Difficulty Level: 700+

Explanation

The passage makes the case for and against sending children in state care to boarding school, so suggested answers A and C are not correct, while B is correct. Although A represents the bulk of the passage, both sides of the argument are presented and the author does not draw a definitive conclusion.

Answer: B
