D is the answer but I used below reasons to eliminate the wrong choices:

Timeline error eliminates A
The first Which eliminates E

Sentence Fragment eliminates B and C? Use of shocked is a meaning issue as it makes one think that it is something he did separately from the action in preceding clause.

Correct me if wrong GMATNinja
