(1) AE equals 16 inches.
(2) BD equals 12 inches.

Area of ACE=1/2*AE*CE

Statement 1: AE=16, but no info about CE is given so insufficient

Statement 2: BD=12, thus BC=1/2*BD=6, but no info about AE and CE, insufficient

1&2 together: we have AE but we donot have sufficient data to calculate value of CE, so insufficient.

Area of right triangle ACE = 1/2 * AE * CE

(1) AE = 16, but we cannot find CE on the basis of this data. Insufficient.

(2) BD = 12. This is the diameter of the circle. So we know radius = BC = CD = 6. But we cannot find CE or AE on the basis of this. Insufficient.

After combining the two statements, we still have no way to find CE. IF we had AB, then AC would be known (AB+BC). And then we could have calculate the area (we have two sides, third side of right angle triangle can be calculated using pythagoras, and area can be determined). But AB is not given. Insufficient.
