It is a medium-level SC question, reasonably straightforward.
One should not take more time than the time taken for an average answer.

The sentence tells us a fact that someone emerged as a highly controversial speaker and that her speeches were attended by the two groups X and Y.

Because it tells us a piece of information it should be written in simple tense. Simple past tense should make more sense here in this sentence.


A. "had flocked" is wrong there is no sequencing of events is intended by the author of the sentence.

B. sentence can not end with "as well as communists" making no sense.

C. independents, as well as communists, flocked to her speaking engagements "correct answer"

D. "the engagements where" engagement is not a place

E. "the engagements where" engagement is not a place
