I would opt for "c" based on the following: in the original phrase the tense of "had been" is incorrect. Therefore eliminate a, c, and e. In b the sense of the sentence is changed and "the Catholic Church continued" is does not referred to any state of being. C fixes the tense problem without changing the sense of the sentence
Had been is Past Perfect Continuous tense. It is used to decribe an action of certain duration in past before another past action occurred. Simple past is correct here.
um yeah... d would be better than c, as c perpetuates the error I mentioned. Can you you call up the test center after the test and tell them that on # 32 you actually meant to answer d?
