Hi JenniferMassey - could not help but read your post.
Just blatantly memorizing a bunch of formulae will not get you far on this test - If anything, it will bring your score down.
You have to understand the reasoning behind every formula if you hope to apply any formula under a vigorous 2 min time constraint.
If you have just memorized formulae, questions exactly like the ones posted by you above will all of a sudden crop up during the exam. (the GMAT test makers will make sure of it
)Check out section 3 in Avi Gutman's book here where these formulae are explained ALL VIA MEANING (i.e. no need to memorize).
Once you understand the logic in the formula you posted, your questions will be automatically answered.

Most GMAT questions are written so that they can be approached in more than one way. Certain types of prompts will certainly require formula knowledge (for example, Geometry is one of those subjects in which specific formulas are built-in to the solving process) - but you will find that many prompts are easily solved with some Tactical thinking and basic Arithmetic/Algebra.
For example, with this question, we're ultimately asked to add up the numbers from 1 to 52, inclusive. There are actually several ways to quickly add up these terms; here's one way called "bunching":
When adding up a group of numbers, the order of the numbers does NOT matter. We can group the numbers into consistent sub-groups:
1+52 = 53
2+51 = 53
3+50 = 53
4+49 = 53
etc.
Every group of 2 terms sums to 53. There are 52 total terms, so that means that there are 26 'pairs' terms. No formulas were needed for this approach.
26(53) = 1378
