It's a one time event in past, so we need to use simple past.

POE:

A) business; instead beginning to Incorrect

After semicolon, we need to use IC.

B) business, instead beginning of the requirement Incorrect

-Weird construction
-V-ing modifier incorrectly modifies traders.

C) business, but instead began to require Correct

Companies.. ceased..., but instead began...

D) business, beginning instead to be required Incorrect

Errors in B are repeated here

E) business; it began instead to require Incorrect

Pronoun error. We need to use 'they' for the antecedent 'companies'

In the late 1890s, Pacific trading companies ceased to place traders in residence on the islands where they conducted business; instead beginning to require that trading managers negotiate directly with local inhabitants when company ships arrived in port.

A) business; instead beginning to // after a semicolon(;) we need an independent sentence.

B) business, instead beginning of the requirement // "ceased" and "beginning" is not parallel. The conjunction "and" or "but" is required before "instead"

C) business, but instead began to require // seems fine

D) business, beginning instead to be required // "ceased" and "beginning" is not parallel. companies are not required, they require!

E) business; it began instead to require // the singular pronoun "it" does not match with the plural noun, "companies".

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

In the late 1890s, Pacific trading companies ceased to place traders in residence on the islands where they conducted business; instead beginning to require that trading managers negotiate directly with local inhabitants when company ships arrived in port.

A) business; instead beginning to

B) business, instead beginning of the requirement

C) business, but instead began to require

D) business, beginning instead to be required

E) business; it began instead to require

in the question the underline is ending at 'to' .... "business; instead beginning to" . All the options other than A contain "requirement/Require/ required" at the end. if option C is correct, then 'require' will come twice. This does not make any sense. In my view OA should be option A.

Hi,
If we look at option C, it is a fanboys construction, in which case it should have a subject... Business, but instead they began to require.. The second clause has to be an IC with both a subject and a verb. Am I missing something?

Regards,
Avanti

Hi,
I see why C is correct but have a few further questions:

1. Can C be looked at as two clauses connected by "but", with the repeated subject omitted from the second clause? Because otherwise I have a problem with but and instead (redundant error).

2. If "it" in E is replaced by "they" then E is correct, right? 2 independent clauses separated by semicolon?
