In the rectangular coordinate system above, point Q (not shown) is the same distance from the line y = x as point P, and it is the same distance from the y axis as point P is from the x axis. Point R (not shown) lies at both the same distance from the x axis and the same distance from the y axis as point Q, but is in a different location. If the coordinates of point P are (4,2), which of the following are possible coordinates of point R?
A. (-4,-2)
B. (-4,5)
C. (2,-4)
D. (4,-2)
E. (-4,-5)

Since the coordinates of point P are (4,2) and point Q is at the same distance from the line y = x as point P, and is at the same distance from the y axis as point P is from the x axis; so, coordinates of point Q are (2,4). You can find it out by slope method as well.
Now Point R is at both the same distance from the x axis and the same distance from the y axis as point Q which is (2,4) but is in a different location. So basically it is 2 units away from y axis and 4 units away from x axis.
Hence, the possible values of coordinates of point R are (2,-4), (-2,4), or (-2,-4).
