In the xy-plane below, if the scales on both axes are the same, which of the following could be the equation of l1 ?
(A) y = 2/3*x – 3
(B) y = –2x + 1
(C) y = x + 3
(D) y = –3x − 2/3
(E) y = −2/3*x – 3
The equation of the line is given by y = mx + c, where m is the slope and c is the y intercept.
(1) Since the line is moving downwards, the slope is negative. This rules out options A and C.
(2) The line cuts the negative y axis, therefore the y intercept has to be negative. This rules out B.
Now looking at the figure carefully, we see that the x intercept is a little bit more than the y intercept in terms of the distance from the origin, or they are almost equal.
From Option D, putting x = 0, the y intercept = -2/3 = -0.67.
Putting y = 0, the x intercept = -2/9 = -0.22
The difference is too much. Check for Option E
From Option E, putting x = 0, the y intercept = -3.
Putting y = 0, the x intercept = -9/2 = -4.5
