In the xy-plane, does the line with the equation y=3x +2 [#permalink]

In the xy-plane, does the line with the equation y=3x +2 contain the point (r,s)?

1) (3r+2-s)(4r+9-s)=0

2) (4r-6-s)(3r+2-s)=0

I have no idea what this is asking.

1) either 3r+2-s=0 or, 4r+9-s=0 => insuff
2) either 4r-6-s=0 or, 3r+2-s=0 => insuff
Together:
If 3r+2-s <> 0, then the other two equations MUST be true.
This is not the case (4r-s cannot be 6 & -9 at the same time)
Hence, 3r+2-s =0
or, s=3r+2, which means the point lies on the line y=3x+2 =>suff

agreed with C..

S=3r+2

so we we know the value of r and s..and we can determine if they exist on the line y=3x+2

if a line $$y=mx+c$$ conatins the point $$(x1,y1)$$ then $$y1=mx1+c$$ must also be true.
So we have to find if the statements can lead us to $$s=3r+2$$
In the xy-plane, does the line with the equation y=3x +2 contain the point (r,s)?

Guys - I'm still confused. I can see that in statement 2)

3r+2-s is the same as

s=3r+2

But what makes the answer C?

from both (1) and (2), s has 2 solutions each.
combined, we can conclude s=3r+2.
