Here is a question from the Kaplan Guide which has be stuck with the ambiguity of its answer ..

In what year did company A begin to operate?
(1) 14 years before company A began to operate, it was 1912.
(2) 5 1/3 years after company A began to operate, it was 1931.

This is not about leap year stuff.
1 Jan, 1912-1 Jan, 1913(1 Year)
OR
29th Feb, 1912-28th Feb, 1913(1 Year)
OR
19th Aug, 1912-19th Aug, 1913(1 Year)

BUT
19th Aug, 1912-19th Sep 1913(1 1/12 Year)

(1)
1912+14=1926
Company A began operating in 1926. Some day in 1926- May be 1st Jan OR 31st Dec.
Sufficient.

(2)
If company started operating from Sep 10, 1925. This will be true.
If company started operating from Aug 20, 1926. This will be true.
1925 and 1926 are two possible answers.
Not Sufficient.

Ans: "A"

A: obviously sufficient
B: It says what year, so unless we know what MONTH in 1931 it was, we don't know what year the company started.

its all the game of (1/3) of a year..i.e. 4 months...details would change if the month was april/june or sept/oct. hence, option 2 is not sufficient..

Hence, A

A: sufficient as year of operation can be found out...
B: says company started 5 years 4 months ago......so depending on the month of start the year of operation will vary
