Let total machine-tools sales in the United States be $$T$$.

Imported tools sales $$= \frac{25}{100}T$$

Japanese Imported tools sales $$= \frac{45}{100}* \frac{25}{100}T$$

As per question

$$\frac{45}{100}* \frac{25}{100}T=x$$

$$T= \frac{100*100}{45*25}x =\frac{80}{9}x$$

we are looking for the total sales of all machine tools ( either imported or produced in usa ).

$$\frac{x}{45}$$*100

=$$\frac{100x}{45}$$
this amount shows the total imported figure which is also 25% of all the machine's amount.

$$\frac{(100x}{45 )/ 25*100}$$

$$\frac{400x}{45}$$

$$\frac{80x}{9.}$$

Japanese imports = 1/4 * 9/20 * Total Imports = x
Total Imports = 80x/9
