The "could be" language makes me doubt this as a GMAT-like question. "Must be" is much more the GMAT's style.
With "could be," either A or E would work.
(A) u^7-u^6 = u^6 (u - 1) = pos (pos -1). That (pos -1) could be pos or negative, based on the constraint that u = "a positive number." For example, if u = 0.5, then (u-1) = negative, but if u = 2, then (u-1) = positive.
(E) u^3-u^8 = u^3 (1 - u^5) = pos (1 - pos). Similar reasoning to that for (A). If u = 0.5, then (1 - u^5) = positive, but if u = 2, then (1 - u^5) = negative.
With "could be," either A or E would work.
