Hey all
What is the difference between inference and conclusion?
Some sites say the are different........some say they are synonyms........if I have to create a wall of difference between the two, what would be the basis for it?
Some sites say that inference is not stated explicitly like an assumption. So are these two same?
"Confusion persists."
Give your explanations to make this difference a bit clear.
Thanks
This confusion persists because 'inference' and 'conclusion' are sometimes used to mean the same thing, and sometimes used to mean different things.
If you're reading a strategy guide and it talks about the 'conclusion of a CR argument', it's referring to a particular part of the argument that represents the author's 'main point'. Identifying the conclusion is important in
all Critical Reasoning problems except for Inference problems.
If you're doing a CR Inference problem, specifically, the
question stem might ask you to find either an 'inference' or a 'conclusion'. In this context, they mean exactly the same thing. You want to pick the one answer choice that can be logically proven based only on the facts in the argument. The GMAT calls this either an 'inference' or a 'conclusion', but that's not the same thing as a real-life inference or a real-life conclusion.
