ING words can be used in four ways
1) verbs
2) nouns
3) adjectives
4) modifiers
Is there any way/method to figure out whether ING words are used as a verb/modifier/adjective/noun?[except for context(meaning)]
For eg, in the case of ed words, there is a test on whether an ed word is a verb or modifier. Do similar thing exists in the case of ING words too?
Also, can we say that in general if the helping verb is absent before ING word then its a modifier for sure??

In some cases you could tell by using structure, but in most cases, you're probably best off using meaning to determine what the words are used for.
