What's the difference between B & D?
Hello,
PTD1995. To answer your question, option (B) is saying that the inquisitor rejects the response of the victim after relying on that very response to come to a conclusion. The situation is paradoxical because the inquisitor has to take the response at face value to declare its meaning false (i.e. no one who would tell the truth would say "yes," so the victim must be lying, but if the victim is lying, then he would be exhibiting a behavior associated with those who consort with the devil... the opposite of the conclusion the inquisitor reached). Option (D), on the other hand, introduces this notion of not believing that a devil exists. The inquisitor makes it clear that he does, in fact, believe there is a devil. Otherwise, why ask in the first place whether the victim is
in league with that very figure? Furthermore, why declare the answer false based on what those associated with the
Evil One would say? If the inquisitor did not believe in a devil, then there would need to be some evidence for it in the passage.
If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
