IntroductionThe INSEAD PhD Program is designed to amplify your talents by offering the best training, experience and advice and gives you firm foundations for a successful career in business academia. With a generous fellowship, it is the ideal springboard to secure positions at the most respected academic departments worldwide.
As a doctoral student at INSEAD, you get the chance to collaborate with globally renowned faculty and thought leaders from INSEAD campuses in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, as well as from the alliance partners, The Wharton School, Sorbonne University and Tsinghua University.
INSEAD’s faculty are deeply invested in your well-being, training, and development, helping you become an outstanding scholar. The Interdisciplinary curriculum provides the depth and breadth needed to develop rigorous and relevant research in a truly unique, diverse and global environment that gives you the freedom to develop your unique research identity. Moreover, INSEAD’s close connection to business, government and society offers the resources and opportunities to conduct your research in the real world, including access to the school’s centers of excellence and leading behavioral laboratory facilities in France and Singapore.
Why an INSEAD PhD?1. The only two-continent programThe INSEAD PhD in Management is the only such program to run across two equal status campuses on two continents in France and Singapore, and the school’s exchange program with the Wharton School in America adds the option of a third.
2. The most culturally diverse in the worldSometimes it feels more like studying on five continents, as the student body is the most international in the world. A typical intake has as many nationalities as it has participants, each bringing a different perspective to the debating table. The faculty is also one of the most international at a top business school.
3...and yet the most intimateINSEAD may be one of the largest and most prestigious postgraduate business schools in the world, but the PhD Program remains small and intimate.
With a maximum of eighteen or so places a year, shared across the two campuses, the student body is close and supportive. Everyone knows everyone else, regardless of their specialist subject. With partners and children encouraged on campus, there is a definite family feel.
4. Close relationships with world expertsPerhaps most important of all, the relationships with the faculty are close too. INSEAD professors are the world experts in their fields, yet their strong ethos of support, collaboration and mentorship is distinctive. Whether in the first two years of classes, or the following period of independent research, the insights and guidance of the world’s best teachers and researchers are always available to PhD students.
5. A stimulating interdisciplinary environmentINSEAD is also unusual in taking an interdisciplinary approach. Professors and PhD students do not simply work across two continents. They also collaborate across academic areas, offering an even greater breadth of research opportunities and different perspectives.
6. Full financial supportAs well as moral and intellectual support, INSEAD offers generous funding. Almost all PhD students benefit from scholarships and living allowances, which come with very few strings attached – except high expectations from students.
Given all these INSEAD differences, it is hardly surprising that INSEAD graduates go on to obtain academic positions at the best business schools and universities worldwide. The Program’s placement record is truly excellent.
Areas of SpecializationINSEAD has
eight choices of specializations that cover the whole breadth of business – and the entire business school curriculum. During the first two years of the program, there are core courses common to all areas. The following are the areas of specialization at INSEAD Ph.D. program.
- Accounting and Control
- Decision Sciences
- Entrepreneurship
- Finance
- Marketing
- Organizational Behavior
- Strategy
- Technology and Operations Management
Accounting and ControlAccounting and Control research seeks to identify and understand the market and institutional forces that affect the production and use of information by organizations broadly defined to include people, firms, not-for-profit entities, government agencies, etc. Research topics typically fall into two categories:
(1) Financial Accounting
(2) Managerial Accounting.
Decision SciencesDecision Sciences is an interdisciplinary field that draws on economics, machine learning, statistical decision theory, forecasting, and cognitive psychology. Decision Sciences at INSEAD addresses three fundamental and inter-related questions.
First, how should a "rational" person make decisions? This question is at the heart of economics, and often serves as a baseline for evaluating human decision-making.
Second, how do people make decisions? Recent research has explored how people are "boundedly rational" and utilize rules-of-thumb and shortcuts to formulate judgments and choose alternatives. Often these shortcuts do well, but equally often they lead to systematic biases and serious errors.
Finally, given what is known about rational decision-making and actual behavior, how can we help people, especially managers, improve their decision making? Decision researchers employ a variety of techniques to improve decision-making, ranging from sharpening statistical intuition to quantitative decision analysis.
The Decision Sciences specialization at INSEAD includes an intellectually diverse faculty that tackles the above questions from many perspectives. INSEAD is committed to the idea that decision-making involves paradoxical tensions between qualitative and quantitative, gut feeling and pure logical reasoning. Consequently, the program aims to provide PhD students with the technical training that serves as a basis for decision modelling and the more qualitative and psychological training required to understand the always present "human" element.
EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship research at INSEAD seeks to understand the creation and growth of new organizations and markets, the renewal of existing companies, the creation of new businesses within existing firms, innovation, and family business in a global world. The area conducts research from the lens of management fields such as organization theory and strategy and social science disciplines such as sociology, economics and psychology. It addresses the challenges and opportunities of building and developing new business as a mechanism for value creation.
FinanceFinance studies the workings of an economy's financial system, its role in channeling financial resources from suppliers of capital to its final users, and allocating risk among investors. More specifically, finance examines the determinants of investment, portfolio, and financing choices of firms and individuals and their mutual interactions. These issues are explored from a theoretical and an empirical perspective, employing various tools ranging from game theory and stochastic calculus to econometrics and statistics.
MarketingMarketing is one of a business school's broadest and most encompassing areas. It involves a deep understanding of how consumers and firms interact several dimensions in the market. Marketing consists in developing a deep understanding of the buyer or consumer and covers the decision domains of designing and delivering products and services, pricing, distributing, and promoting (both personal--sales force management--and impersonal--mass communications, such as advertising or marketing through the internet), based on this understanding. Marketing also covers the strategic domain of resource allocation among product/market combinations.
Broadly defined, here are some of the research interests in the Marketing area: branding, B2B marketing, consumer behavior, customer relationship management, customer/behavioral decision making, customer centricity, distribution channels, e-business, forecasting, innovation, international marketing, advertising, new product development, pharmaceutical marketing, pricing, promotion, retailing, sales force management, service management, strategic marketing and transaction cost analysis.
Organizational BehaviorOrganizational behavior is a core field of study at INSEAD. The OBH area draws upon psychology, anthropology, sociology and economics and examines how the organizational, social, and economic context influences behavior and how, in turn, behavior influences context.
The OBH area's diverse research interest includes leadership, group and team dynamics, identity, discrimination, negotiations, power and influence, virtual communication, ethics, decision-making, creativity, networks, organizational ecology, institutions and organizations, and careers. The area employs various research methodologies to address these topics, including large-scale field studies, randomized experiments and qualitative methods.
Strategy Faculty members of the Strategy area are concerned with the foundations of sustainable superior firm performance. Research in the strategic management area stems primarily from two intellectual traditions. One stream of thought is rooted in economics and uses insights about firms and industries gleaned from neoclassical, evolutionary, and institutional economics as a basis for understanding business strategy. In contrast, the other tradition in strategic management combines strategy and organizational theory. It focuses on the study of the leadership and the management of organizational processes that generate superior enterprise strategies.
Technology and Operations ManagementThe Technology and Operations Management Area (TOM) encompass all activities an organization carries out to transform inputs into value for the customer. In general terms, operations management is the design, management, and improvement of all value-adding processes in an organization that lead to some form of output, whether a product or service. These processes span a broad range of activities surrounding the issues of design, procurement, manufacturing and delivery of products and services.

PhD FundingIn practice, it is rare for PhD students to fund their studies from their resources. As the program is rigorous and intensive and expectations are high, INSEAD does not want Ph.D. students to bear the financial burdens typically associated with a doctoral study.
- Tuition Fee Waiver: 100%
- Tuition fee for the First two years (waived): 70,000€
- Dissertation Fees from third to fifth year (waived): 21,000 €
Funding Types- Annual Funding
- Stipend
- Research and Conference Support
- Health Insurance
The INSEAD Fellowship is available for the first five years (until the end of August the fifth year*) of doctoral studies and renewed annually dependent on the candidate's satisfactory progress. The INSEAD Fellowship unlike most graduate degrees in business, the PhD Program is intensive and rigorous. INSEAD offers one of the most generous doctoral funding to ensure all candidates do not have to worry about fees associated with pursuing a doctoral degree.
All admitted students receive the INSEAD Fellowship for the first five years* of full-time studies. The yearly
funding includes a tuition fee waiver, a stipend, research and conference budget support, and health insurance coverage. Thus, they do not need to seek loans to pay tuition fees in France or Singapore, or to cover their living expenses, conference and research budgets, and health insurance. This generous benefit is renewed annually, contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program, and is given to all admitted students regardless of background, nationality or need.
INSEAD invests in its PhD students' development and training to become successful management professors. Funding their studies is a significant investment by the school, made possible by a group of generous donors. With such comprehensive support, the program expects students to always focus on their research training and advancement. As such, it is strongly discouraged working part-time during the program, which is counterproductive to their development. Furthermore, with the tuition fee waiver and financial support, INSEAD PhD candidates are free from the financial burdens many graduate students face while pursuing their studies.
On the other hand, visiting PhD students are
not eligible for funding and must pay for any courses attended and related expenses.
Tuition Fee WaiverTuition fees are waived for the first five years* of the program - coursework fees for the first two years and dissertation fees for the next three years. Students do not have to take out loans to finance their PhD studies.
Annual Stipend, Conference and Research SupportPhD students receive substantial financial support (i.e., annual stipend, research and conference budget, and international health insurance coverage) in the first five years of doctoral studies.
There is no separate application to secure the funding. Therefore, upon admission, students will be automatically offered five-year funding* and need not worry about any costs associated with postgraduate studies. The program renews the funding* yearly, contingent upon the candidate's satisfactory progress. Research or teaching assistantships are not required in exchange for the scholarship, since assistantships are part of the curriculum and already included in the funding.
PhD Funding

| Health Insurance Coverage | Including spouses and children | Including spouses and children |
Health Insurance CoverageStudents also receive comprehensive international health insurance coverage, which includes spouses and children.
Once admitted to INSEAD, the program will offer automatic annual funding, regardless of background. Admitted students need not worry about the associated costs of pursuing doctoral studies. Kindly note that INSEAD renew the financing annually, contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program.
Seeking External FundingPhD students are encouraged to seek external funding to increase overall financial benefit. While INSEAD provides scholarships and stipends for those accepted to the program, it is nonetheless always advisable to seek external funding for your studies to increase your overall financial benefit. For example, if you were to receive a full scholarship from a non-INSEAD source, you would be able to receive additional funding from INSEAD to supplement your overall award.
However, please note that having full funding from an external source does not increase your chances of admission. Thus, INSEAD selects applicants for admission based on perceived academic potential and fit for the program, not one’s ability to pay for the program or receive supplemental funds.
