When we say, antagonizing each other, two people are in action. Smith alone doing it is improper modification So, we can eliminate A, B and D. C has a pronoun number problem in the second part. The subject of the second part is- they-. This plural subject does not gel with the singular - his.
So E. Incidentally --do his biochemical research undisturbed – is correct expression. Eg; he walks fast; not fastly; he sings well, not welly or goodly; he jumped high, not jumped highly; he went short in his positions, not he went shortly in his positions.
