I feel so stupid for posting this but I figure that I am going to feel even stupider for not knowing. I was reading a GMAT Prep book yesterday and it was discussing exponents when I came across this sentence. "Let x and y be any positive numbers, and let r and s be any positive integers." I was under the impression that an integer was a whole number and they are referring to numbers as a whole number because they show examples. If any of you have the 11th edition of the GMAT Prep book it is on page 125. My question is... What is the difference between an integer and a number? By the way the sentence is written I am thinking that maybe there is a distinct difference.

Number is a very broad term.
In GMAT a number can be one of these :- whole number, natural number, integer, numbers with decimal, fractions, rational and irrational.
Here they just want to tell u that the number can have decimal values as well, negative and positive.

Integer is just a whole number, it can be both positive and negative.
If it says it is number, you never know whether it is whole, decimal, or fraction.
If it says it is number, you never know whether it is whole, decimal, or fraction.
