Volume is 6cu.ft. The height is 1.5ft. 6/1.5=4. Since the (square) base is 4 sq.ft, the side should be 2 ft.
Area of the room is 6x10=60sq.m You need 10 number if 0.6 (60cm) x10 m long pieces to cover it. So the cost is 2.25x10x10= 225$

If the compound interest on a certain sum at 5% for 3 years is 1262 $ what is the simple interest ans is 1200
Simple Interest = Principal (P)*Rate (r)* Time (t)= Prt, since we've been given time and rate all we need to find is the Principal before we can plug in to find Simple Interest
But we've been given compound interest, and the formula for find the compounded amount (Principal + Compound Interest) is given as ====> P(1+r)^t
Therefore the formula for compound interest alone is P(1+r)^t - (P)= P [(1+R)^t - (1)] Therefore P= C.I./[(1+R)^t - (1)] P=1262/[(1+5%)^3 -(1)]= 1262/(0.157625)= 8000
S.I.= 8,000*5%*3 = 1200
By the way, you're unlikely to be given such numbers on the real GMAT. If they give you this kind of numbers, the answer choice would be such that a quick approximation can help you identify the right answer fast.

Let's work on the 2nd and 3rd questions first:
Question 2: a rectangular box with a square base contains 6 cubic feet.if the height of the box is 18 inches how many feet are there in the side of each base
The volume of the box will be Area of the base * Height
You need to know how to convert feet to inches. 1 foot = 12 inches (this will be given) So Volume = \(6 foot^3 = 6*12*12*12 inches^3\)
(Think of it this way: 6 foot^3 = 6 * 1 foot * 1 foot * 1 foot = 6 * 12 inches * 12 inches * 12 inches)
Area of the base = Side^2 = Volume/Height = 6*12*12*12/18 = 4*12*12
Side = 2*12 = 24 inches = 2 foot
Question 3: a room is 10 meter long and 6 meter broad find the cost of covering its floor with the carpet 60cm wide at the rate of $2.25 per meter
The room is 1000 cm (= 10m) long and 600 cm broad. The width of the carpet is 60 cm so you will need 10 sheets placed next to each other to cover the entire width of the room. The length of each sheet should be equal to the length of the room i.e. 1000 cm (= 10 m) long. So you need 10*10 = 100 m of the carpet length. Cost of 100 m of the carpet will be 2.25*100 = $225
On to question 1: 1f the compound interest on a certain sum at 5% for 3 years is 1262 $ what is the simple interest
You first need to understand the basics of compound interest and how it is different from simple interest. Thereafter, this question can be easily solved. Mind you, rather than a 3 yr time frame, a 2 yr time frame is more probable as far as GMAT is concerned.
Now, 1262 is the compound interest earned in 3 yrs. Say, compound interest earned in the first year is I.
1262 = 3I + 3*(.05)I + (.05)(.05)I (try to work out this expression from the concepts discussed in the post) 1262 = (3.1525)I In a GMAT question, you would expect 1262 to be completely divisible by 3.1525 since you are not expected to make long calculations. 3 times 4 is 12 so try to find 3.1525*4 which you get as 12.61 (very close to 12.62) Hence, I = 400
Simple interest is simply 3I (same interest every year) so SI = 3*400 = 1200
