Hi,
I understand that in US, international applicants don't typically bag Marketing jobs post an MBA. What is a good route to get into Marketing/related functions.
Thank You
Well... it depends... it really depends on your goals and types of marketing. The best way is ALWAYS to have prior work experience in the same area/field or do something that shows potential employers that you won't bail on them in 6 months and that you can deliver results. Something that can help is an internship if you are transitioning but the best thing would be to get a brand name (Coca Cola or McDonalds - something everyone knows and have marketing on your resume).
PS. It can be tougher in marketing for international applicants who do not have the cultural background to convert those jobs as many do depend on the background for approaching markets, segments, and connecting with customers. However, one of the first guys from my class to find a job was a Chinese student who was super outgoing. His language skills were not great but that did not stop him from being the heart of many parties and delivering great presentations. He found a solid marketing job early on.
There is quantitative marketing (research, etc) that many international folks get into, though it also often requires prior work experience to successfully covert into an offer.
