I suggest always dressing formal for an interview. You definitely won't make a BAD impression by dressing formal...and he/she will certainly appreciate your professionalism.

I was thinking of asking my interviewer how he expected me to dress, but that might seem really unprofessional to ask such a question? Guess I'll go with the suit - better overdressed than underdressed.

I am having my cbs interview in a Panera. And my interviewer had this in his email -"I will dress very casually- feel free to do the same or whatever is comfortable to you". So now, I dont want to dress up in a suit as I am definitely not comfortable in that, nor do I want to go over in my jeans. So..I think business casual (dress shirt/pants) with a sweater should be fine.

I had my Stanford interview at a Starbucks. I was initially a bit confused about what I was supposed to wear, so I went ahead and emailed my interviewer.

His response was along the lines of, "Whoops, I'm sorry I forgot to mention that. Let's just make it business casual." Then we both showed up wearing sweater, dress shirt, and khakis :)

So I don't think it would be unprofessional to ask...

It's not unprofessional to ask at all. I asked my Kellogg and UCLA interviewers and they both said business casual or casual is fine. My UCLA interview wore jeans and a shirt, my Kellogg interviewer was working from home and late for the interview, so she wore a t-shirt and track pants.

I generally wear business casual with a tie, unless the interviewer asks for formal.

I think it also depends what day of the week it is. If the interview is on the weekend, at a Starbucks, definitely no suit.

I think what kryzak said will work,, smart shirt with sweater (no jeans or sneakers). Imagine if u were going for brunch as a nice restaurant in the weekend, wear that!

but if it is in the middle of the work week and u are meeting him/her over lunch, throw in a tie (or a suit), which would signal that you work at a company that expects u to wear a suit.
