Interview Statistics and Acceptance Rates

Question

I seem to remember seeing the acceptance rates of interviewed candidates, by school. For example, some schools accepted 99% of the students they interviewed while others only 60%.

Does anyone have any stats/info on this? :-D

are you sure you arent confusing "% of accepted students that were interviewed" and "% of interviewed students that were accepted?"

i dont think any top school accepts 99% of applicants that are interviewed. but almost all of the top 10 interview 99% of accepted students.

I would also be curious to know these stats..

I heard somewhere that Harvard accepts 40% or so of the interviewees, while some other schools accept a far higher percentage.

I would imagine there are no hard stats on this, but anybody heard rough numbers?

I can only answer for Haas, which is generally between 50-75% of interviewed gets accepted.

UCLA seems closer to 60-70% (just a guess)

Stanford I heard is trying to push the rate to 60+%.

Kellogg it doesn't matter, everyone gets interviewed if there are alums in the area.

Anyone have an idea of the acceptance rates for those invited to interview at Wharton, Chicago or Yale? Seen a few different estimates out there.

Last year Wharton accepted approximately 38% of the people that were interviewed. This is not a great number and I was actually hoping for a much higher percentage...... :evil:

see, i disagree though, ryguy. i mean, yeah, it would be great if it were 100% acceptance and we could all go to our dream school, but i translate a low % as an opportunity for more people to get face to face with adcom and add some color to their application. maybe that's just me...or a few weak spots in my application...speaking... :roll:

that being said, i heard stern was closer to 60/70%.

It varies pretty wildly, depending on how the school treats interviews.

From my own research, there are basically three kinds of schools--those that have applicant-initiated interviews (Tepper, Duke), those that use the interview as "just another data point" and therefore invite a higher number of applicants (Wharton), and those that use the interview as a sort of "final hurdle" (HBS, MIT, Haas).

Just from my research, it generally fell like this:

HBS: Interviews around 25% and accepts around 50-60% of those interviewed
MIT: Pretty much the same as HBS
Wharton: Interviews around 50% and accepts around 35% of those interviewed
Haas: Interviews around 25%-ish, and accepts around 65-75% (they have a slightly higher acceptance rate than most schools because of Super Saturday--a higher majority of students who go to SS are accepted because attending SS is considered a strong sign of interest, and therefore likely to help the yield stat).

Duke and Tepper allow candidates to sign themselves up for interviews up to a certain date, and then after that are invite only, so there aren't many useful stats there.

If you check each school's thread on the BW forum, there's usually a discussion of these stats right around the time interviews are going out. I know there was for round 1, at least, for all the schools I apped to.

good analysis jc! The only thing I would add is that at this year's SS for R1 at Haas, they said specifically that they interviewed 20% of the R1 applicants. Given that last year's acceptance rate was around 14%, and this year may hover between 12-14%, that's a roughly 65-75% rate, just like you said.
