I had given GMAT today and could only score 605 (71 percentile). Honestly I had only about 3 weeks of preparation with a job and could have done better.

My background:

- 2.5 years of work experience in strategy consulting division of a big 4.
- B-Tech from old IIT with 8+ CGPA

I will get good recommendation letters and have decent co-curricular.

But given ISB’s last date of R3 submission is 21st Jan’25, and there is a 16 day gap to reappear for the exam, I have no time to retake the exam and get a better score.

Shall I go ahead with application or is there no point in me applying?

Appreciate your inputs.

Dear Rahuljaggu

The beginning of your query itself suggests that you personally feel that you could have gotten a much better score. Sometimes we aren't able to give our best on the scheduled test day due to numerous factors.

We firstly want you to reflect on your performance in the mock exams if you took any. If you had been consistently performing better in the mocks as compared to your present test performance, we believe its worth reattempting and applying in this admission cycle.

We certainly see good highlights in your profile with your undergraduate education from an old IIT and your work experience, but the present score would make you lose on an important differentiator thereby significantly impacting your chances.

We will be happy to have a more detailed discussion with you to understand your profile better and support you through your application journey. Please feel free to block our time at : https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min/

Warm regards,

Rahuljaggu,

Both the average no. of months of work experience and the GMAT score is well below the par expected by ISB and since R3 is even tougher to get into, we will recommend you to wait for a year - build more work ex, achieve a higher GMAT score and then apply. If you apply in R3 now and unfortunately don't get it in, you will have a tough time justifying change in your profile while applying for R1 for the admissions for next year.

Cheers and all the very Best !!

Hi Rahuljaggu , your 2.5 years of experience in strategy consulting is decent but the score is below ISB’s average. Since you can’t retake the GMAT before R3 (26 January 2025), it’s worth applying if you can emphasize your work experience, recommendations, and co-curriculars. ISB considers applicants holistically, so focus on presenting a strong narrative. However, given the competitiveness of R3, exploring other schools with more flexible GMAT requirements could be a good idea as well. All the best.

What exactly do you mean by change in profile? Do you mean will ISB ask about why the GMAT score was low in the first attempt? Thanks in advance

Hello Rahuljaggu,

You have only 2.5 years of work experience; so, you should ideally wait and apply with an improved score in R1 next year.

All the best!
