Is a/b > 0 ?

(1) ab > 0
(2) a – b > 0

Is not the answer B

From statement : a > b ?

1) we do not know the sign of a and b

2) a > b as statement 2

Some explanation ??

No, answer is A.

Is a/b > 0?

Question basically asks whether a and b have the same sign.

(1) ab > 0 --> a and b have the same sign. Sufficient.

(2) a – b > 0 --> a>b, from this we can not conclude whether a and b have the same sign: if a=2 and b=-1 then the answer to the question is NO (a/b=-2<0) but if a=2 and b=1 then the answer to the question is YES (a/b=2>0). Not sufficient.

Answer: B.

P.S. Realistic GMAT question would mention in the stem that b does not equal to zero.

Got it.

But in this question is wrong to rephrase the statement as a > b ?? or is unwary ??'

No you can not rephrase "is a/b>0?" as "is a>b?". a can be more than b as well as less than b, irrespective of the sign:
a=-1>-2=b;
a=-2<-1=b;
a=2>1=b;
a=1<2=b.

Hope it's clear.

Is a/b > 0 ?
Does a and b have the same sign?

(1) ab > 0

This statement tells us a and b have the same sign. SUFFICIENT.

(2) a – b > 0
a > b. Doesn't tell us if a and b have the same sign. INSUFFICIENT.

Answer is A.
