The "is it worth it" question is always a tricky one. It depends on how you measure value.
Could you get into machine learning without a degree? Probably. In fact, likely. How could would the professional position be? It depends.
Could you pull this off with a comp sci, engineering or data science degree instead? Likely. Could you supplement your interest with a few side courses instead of a degree? Most definitely.
Sometimes these companies hiring for folks in specific areas are seeking candidates with raw skills and assume that they will develop the expertise partially on the job. Of course, if you are targeting a more senior-level position then demonstrated knowledge and experience might be close to requisite. In that case, a degree in ML could be instrumental in landing the role.
The point is, there are a ton of ways to determine if this degree is worth it. You should apply to several programs that are ML-focused or have ML concentrations/tracks (as noted in a previous post) and, if accepted, attend welcome weekends and talk to current/former students to better understand the ROI for their degree.
