Greetings!
Just as I was dealing with issues in GMAT prep, I believe I may have to make a firm decision with regard to my employment. My mother has fallen sick and needs attention and care at home. She will also be undergoing a surgery in 1-2 weeks and I may be tied up with her post-operative care at home. My organisation doesn't seem to be keen to allow me that unpaid time off from work (which is understandable) to care for my mother and I may have to resign to take care of things back at home. I work as a chef manager with a leading hotel brand in India and am aiming to apply to IIM A/B/C and ISB this year. Initially planned to apply in round 1, but that seems a far fetched goal and I have adjusted my plans accordingly to apply in round 2 which I believe will be able to do. I am a hopeless optimistic and considering that even if push comes to shove and I have to resign, I can manage to plan work at home effectively to allow for more time for GMAT prep thereby leading to a higher score but am anxious about not being employed at the time of application. Can someone help me understand the consequences involved here?

As for your application, there is absolutely no requirement to be presently employed at the time you submit. It's entirely understandable in a situation such as yours where you might have to take a hiatus from work. The schools will understand this as long as you note it in the optional essay. In addition to explaining your situation, you should have a forward-looking approach about what you plan to do when you are in a position to work again. The schools will want to see you bounce back from adversity.
At the end of the day, mental and physical health often have to come before other matters. Don't layer on more stress. Do what's best for yourself and let the process play itself out.

The schools will want to see you bounce back from adversity.
