Hi mbaMission Experts,
I am an Indian Female, age 24. I am matriculating in an MS program this fall. It is at Duke University. I have work experience just shy of 3 years as an environmental engineer at an Oil and Gas company (1 promotion, managed an entire oil field's Environmental compliance for almost 2 years). My UG is from an IIT with gpa of 8.74 and GRE score of 333 (163 V 170 Q). I have some volunteer experience.
I am now also considering to apply for MBA upon graduating from this program. This should add one more year of work experience. I would like to target top 10 mba programs in USA ( preferably HSW) so I am not confident about my profile right now. I am looking forward to strengthening my profile through my MS (since it is professionally oriented) by graduate consultant jobs, internships, research work at the Fuqua's EDGE centre and gaining some more volunteering experience. Am I being impractical and should I consider applying for MBA only after gaining a significant work experience after MS?

Congrats on starting at the Duke MS program this fall! Your work background also is differentiated for business schools because oil and gas is a not traditionally a big feeder industry to MBA programs. So that's good news - as long as you can articulate why you are seeking an MBA, and how it will help you achieve your future career goals. You also have strong academics (GPA and GRE).
As for how many years of work experience you should have before you apply for the top MBA programs, there's not a specific number. Most applicants apply when they have anywhere between 3 to 6 years of full-time work experience post-undergraduate. So you should be right in the sweet spot when you've graduated from your MS program.
