Is it mandatory to fill in my GPA and Work experience Information in my profile section before writing the GMAT ? What are the downsides of writing GMAT with only the basic info (Name, Date of Birth) provided ?

No it is not at all mandatory to fill your GPA and work-ex information.It is just some additional you may choose to fill or leave empty

It is optional and up to you. Most fill it out. It is self reported info that GMAC then sells to schools and allows them to filter through candidates for marketing purposes.
Some notice they get a lot of junk mail from random MBA programs after taking the gmat and ESP if they do well.
