Is it Too Late to Apply for MIT’s EMBA Program (June deadline)?MIT’s EMBA deadline is approaching, with the final deadline on June 1, 2016. Is it too late for you to prepare an application and submit it successfully, achieving admission? No, it is not too late, but you should get moving soon!
GMAT/ GREYou will be happy to know that MIT Sloan does not require a standardized test in order for you to apply, so you do not need to present a GMAT or GRE score. This means you can focus your efforts on preparing the critical components of the application that will determine your admissions success – your application essays, recommendations, resume and application form. Be mindful that MIT’s EMBA essay topics are challenging, so get started soon!
Create a timeline Even if you will only be applying to MIT’s EMBA program and not additional programs, you should set out target dates for finishing your initial drafts, revising those drafts, proofing those drafts and submitting them. Do your best to stay on target!
Does it matter if you submit in April or May rather than June?If at all possible, submit as soon as you can, because the MIT process is rolling even though there is a final deadline. Therefore, if you are able to submit the application by early May, there will be more seats still available at that time than in the third week of May. Aim for the earlier submission date in order to increase your odds of success.
Recommendations Recommendations can sometimes be the application requirement that causes a delay in submission. You are relying on another person to compose and submit the document, and your recommendation writers can be very busy with other obligations! So approach each of your two recommendation writers as soon as you can to explain the many benefits of the program and get them fully on board with writing the recommendation for you.
For EMBA admissions, recommendations can play a pivotal role in whether or not you are granted admission. They need to attest to your strong abilities, success in the workplace and suitability as a student. They need to highlight how much you can contribute to a learning program and help you stand out in the applicant pool. You want to make sure your recommendations are truly outstanding. If necessary, supply the writer with a list of your achievements and credentials that can help them write a strong letter for you.
Begin drafting! MIT’s EMBA program has some of the most challenging essays of all of the top EMBA programs. Your statement of purpose must impress the committee. Other essays will require that you elaborate on a leadership example – a big opportunity for you to showcase your skills and successes. Because there are in essence four 500-word essays (including the statement of purpose), you also need to make sure that the content across these essays work together and together paint a compelling portrait of the success you have been in the past and present, and of the great potential you have both as an EMBA student and in your future career. The admissions committee should get a very strong sense of where you are heading in your career – and you should strive to ensure that the way you present your long-term and short-term goals is working for you in the admissions process. The EMBA application is considered your “marketing package” and you want your essays to be outstanding. Write your EMBA essays with care!
Your resume and application formYour EMBA application essays, resume, recommendations and application form each play an important role in shaping the admissions committee’s perceptions of whether you are an excellent EMBA candidate nor not. As you prepare your application, try to avoid the mistake of neglecting your resume and application form. What are your main responsibilities? How have your responsibilities expanded over time? How have you brought impact in the workplace? What skills have you gained and refined over time? How do you contribute to the community? Make sure your resume and application form address qualifications like this. If you are a candidate who has some weaknesses in your profile – such as a mediocre undergraduate performance, multiple short-duration jobs or a period of unemployment – you should make special efforts to ensure your resume and application redirect attention to the many other credentials you have that indicate you have been successful and possess strong skills.
