Hello Everyone,
I work in the animation industry.I have been working in one of the top animation studios in Los Angeles for the last 6+ years as a Technical Artist.
I am highly interested in pursuing a part-time mba program related to entertainment and media management or something akin that would land me a management job in media/entertainment or the gaming industry.
However, there would be no use or application of my mba degree in my current job.I would have make a career switch(which I am ready to) to make the most out of my management degree.Also, my current employer will not sponsor any part of my degree expenses.All the expenses will be out of my pocket.
My undergrad was in Computer science and I have a masters in Fine Arts.
Do you guys think that my current work experience in the animation industry which is no way related to management would be a deterring factor in getting into a good business school and finding a good job after the completion of my part-time/fully employed MBA program ? since most of the people I have heard of pursue their fully employed MBA degree to advance in their current careers as opposed to make a career switch.
What would be some other MBA streams that might be suitable for me and help me utilize my work experience in the animation industry to my advantage as opposed to starting from a blank slate.

What i have seen is it does not matter where you come from if you have goals and can show (really show not just imply) how an MBA will help you reach those goals it will work. A lot of career changers shoot for Full Time programs (like myself) so I would understand the reasons for keeping your job. Link you future goals with you past (even indirectly) and show you have a real reason for moving. Make sure it is personal though, yeah maybe the job market becoming saturated is a concern but what about the new field intrigues you. Introspection will help... my two sense. What i said is probably not the best explanation but I encourage you too really think about it before you go blindly into it (like i did!!), it will pay off when it comes to your application!

It depends on the post-MBA career path that you want to take. Do you want to be a specialist or a generalist? An MBA gives you breadth but not depth in skills development. Take a look at the profiles of people who you want to work with - do they have MBAs? If not, how did they get there? Not all managers have MBAs, and I would imagine that managers in the entertainment industry care less about getting MBAs vs other industries. The entertainment industry values the creative spirit and whether someone can amalgamate the collective creative talents of artists. I'm sure you're in a better position to judge whether that is true or not better than I am. I think artists respect managers who are more of their kind (read: artists who know the business side of things) then the pointy-headed Dilbert types (same for computer scientists with coders).
Net net, I think the MBA might be a wash for you in terms of qualifications if you want to manage the creative spirits. Being a good artist / coder might give you more mileage then trying to impress your subjects...(employees, *cough*) with a shiny MBA degree.
