I took the GMAT today for the first time. I was aiming for a 700 and was initially really excited when I saw I had scored it on my score report.
However I noticed that the discrepancy between my two scores is rather large: V47 (99%) Q39 (43%).
Preferably I would have scored a 700 with a lower verbal and higher quant score . I knew going in that verbal was my strong suite and quant was my weakness, so I spent my 2 months of studying exclusively on quant. My final practice test was a bit more balanced, but I think when I took the actual test I rushed through the beginning of quant a bit, and before I reminded myself to slow down the damage was done.
Is it worth it to spend a month or two studying more quant and then try to retake the test?
Or will school admissions primarily look at my overall score, with the independent scores not mattering as much?

Hi lukepowell,
First off, a 700 is an outstanding score (it's right around the 90th percentile overall. Your combination of Scaled Scores is on the rarer end (more Test Takers hit a 700+ score with a higher Quant Scaled Score than higher Verbal Scaled Score), but it shouldn't keep you from applying to any Business Schools that interest you. The Q39 might be a minor 'red flag' to certain Schools (especially Top Finance Programs or Specialty Programs), but you'll be judged on the strength of your OVERALL application and not just on that one statistic.
What Schools are you planning to apply to? And when?

I'm in Canada, and right now I'm looking at Rotman (University of Toronto) or DeGroote (McMaster), and I'll start applications next year. I have picked Rotman and DeGroote because they do not require relevant work experience, although Rotman strongly recommends it. My only current work experience is in social work. DeGroote is a pretty easy school to get into (600 GMAT average) but quite quant focused. Rotman has an average of 670, so I was aiming for 700 to help offset my lack of relevant work experience.
